NBE3U Unit 6: Signal and Story
Contemporary Indigenous media: APTN, NFB Indigenous Cinema, Isuma and Atanarjuat, documentary, music, podcasts, Idle No More and language technology, ending in a student-made spotlight media text.
Students trace the move from being filmed to filming, compare two reports of one event, learn how money, distribution and regulation shape Indigenous media, study a feature film, documentaries, musicians and podcasts chosen by the teacher, and weigh the benefits and risks of putting cultural knowledge online. They then plan, design, produce, test and screen a spotlight on a contemporary First Nations, Métis or Inuit creator or initiative, using the creator's own public words with citation. Teacher notes recommend reviewing the course with your board's Indigenous education lead and inviting Elders, Knowledge Keepers or Métis Senators through board protocol, and include support resources wherever residential schools and loss come up. Contemporary texts are chosen by the teacher from board-approved resources (titles only); public domain writing by Indigenous authors of the past is included in full as historical context.
Assessment of learning: a spotlight media text and a production log with a reflection, with rubrics.
