NBE3U Independent Study and Final
The last unit of NBE3U: an independent study of a book by a First Nations, Métis or Inuit author with a comparative essay and seminar, review lessons, and a final evaluation built on an original sight text.
Students choose a teacher-approved book by a First Nations, Métis or Inuit author early in the semester, complete check-ins, write a comparative essay connecting it to a course text and lead a seminar. Review lessons cover sight-text strategies, course review stations, timed practice and a portfolio of growth. The final evaluation includes an original sight text written for this course, “Maker: Unknown,” with analysis questions, essay prompts on course texts, a rubric and a marking guide.
Assessment of learning: the culminating task (part of classroom work) and the final exam (25%, written in the exam period), with rubrics and a marking guide.
This part of the course is free to download and use with your classes.
