SNC2D Unit 3: Chemical Reactions
Ions, naming and formulas for ionic and molecular compounds, evidence of chemical change, conservation of mass, balancing equations, the main reaction types, acids, bases and neutralization, and reactions in safety and the environment.

How can we describe, predict and use chemical reactions? Students name and write formulas for ionic and molecular compounds, then investigate reactions with household-safe labs: change stations, molecular models, a sealed-bag mass lab, peroxide and yeast, copper-plated nails, an Epsom salt precipitate, red cabbage indicator and neutralization. They balance equations, classify reaction types, analyse real safety and environmental issues, and meet Canadian chemists and chemistry careers. Every problem has a worked solution.
Assessment of learning: an antacid neutralization inquiry and report with a rubric, plus a unit test with a worked answer key.
