SNC2D Unit 2: Tissues, Organs and Systems
Cells under the microscope, the cell cycle and mitosis, cancer, specialized cells and stem cells, plant and animal tissues, organs and systems, a dissection, disease, medical imaging, public health and ethics.

How do cells divide and specialize to build tissues, organs and systems? Students compare plant and animal cells under the microscope, model the cell cycle, count cells in each phase of mitosis and compare normal and cancerous division with original data. They study specialized cells and stem cells (including Toronto's Till and McCulloch), test plant tissues with celery and leaf peels, model digestion, measure heart and breathing rates, and dissect a flower alongside a free virtual frog. The unit closes with disease research, medical imaging, public health and an ethics debate.
Assessment of learning: a Systems Biology Issue Report with a rubric, plus a unit test with a worked answer key.
