Free lesson: Indirect Measurement Lab (Grade 10 Math)

Try a complete lesson free: students head outside to measure something too tall to reach, using similar triangles with shadows and a mirror, then compare their two results and explain the error.

This is a complete lesson from MPM2D Unit 6, Similar and Right Triangles, free to download and use. It's exactly what you get in the paid units, so you can see the quality before you buy.

Students work in groups to measure the height of a light standard, flagpole or wall two ways: with shadows and with a mirror on the ground. They record their measurements, draw and label the similar triangles, calculate each height, find the percent difference, and explain the sources of error. Rainy-day sample data is included, so the lab works even if you can't go outside. All you need is measuring tapes, a small mirror and calculators.

What you get

  • A teacher lesson plan built on the Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics curriculum (MPM2D), with expectations, learning goals, success criteria, a timed sequence, safety notes, differentiation and a worked answer key
  • A slide deck with speaker notes on every slide, including lab roles and answer slides
  • A two-page student handout: the Lab Sheet and the Analysis
  • Editable Word and PowerPoint files, plus PDFs
