ENG4U Unit 2: Hamlet
Shakespeare's Hamlet act by act: a Denmark case file, an “Is Hamlet mad?” evidence board, three stagings, four centuries of critics and a soliloquy showcase.

A ghost tribunal, three stagings of the nunnery scene, a soliloquy remix, the Mousetrap from three viewpoints, Ophelia's missing scenes, a graveyard memento mori and a “who is to blame?” inquiry. Students then read Hamlet's critics from Goethe and Coleridge to Bradley and Eliot and compare film interpretations. Grief, suicide and madness are handled with care routines and support resources in the teacher notes.
Assessment of learning: a soliloquy performance with director's commentary and a literary essay that responds to a critic, with rubrics.
