CHC2D Unit 1: Thinking Like a Historian
Historical inquiry from the ground up: question types, primary and secondary sources, the four concepts of historical thinking and an original 1918 source set, ending with a document-based Source Detective task.

Students learn to think like historians before the content units begin: the difference between the past and history, five types of inquiry questions, primary and secondary sources, a five-question source check, citations and the four concepts of historical thinking. They investigate an original source set about the 1918 influenza in an invented Ontario town and compare two news reports to see how history skills apply to today's issues.
Assessment of learning: Source Detective, a document-based analysis of five sources on how Canadians reacted to the start of World War I, with a four-level rubric and a teacher guide.
