Rubric builder

Start from the Ontario achievement chart or a blank page, shape the criteria and levels, then print it, paste it into Google Docs or Word, or save it to use again. Everything stays in your browser; nothing is saved or sent.

1. Start from

Starting points replace the rubric below. Every word is editable. A rubric file is one you saved from this page with "Save rubric file".

2. About the rubric

3. Criteria and levels

Each row of the rubric is a criterion. Give each level a title, a descriptor and, if you're scoring, points.

4. Your rubric

"Copy table" pastes into Google Docs or Word as a table with borders. The CSV opens in Google Sheets or Excel. Save the rubric file to edit this rubric again later.

Student self-assessment checklist (optional)

Turn the rubric into a checklist students fill in before they hand in their work: they tick the level that best describes their work for each criterion and point to their evidence.

The Ontario starting point uses the qualifiers from the achievement chart in Growing Success (2010): limited, some, considerable and thorough for Knowledge and Understanding, and limited, some, considerable and a high degree of effectiveness for Thinking, Communication and Application. Adjust the descriptors to your course's expectations and your task. Nothing you type leaves this page, so save a rubric file if you want to come back to it.
