MTH1W Unit 5: Geometry and Measurement
Measurement stories and careers, metric and imperial conversions, circle and triangle properties in design, the Pythagorean relationship, changing dimensions, and volumes of prisms, pyramids, cylinders and cones.

How do geometry and measurement help us design and build? Students tell the story of a measurement system and connect it to careers, convert units within and between systems (including area and volume units), use circle and triangle properties in designs, apply the Pythagorean relationship to ladders, ramps, screens and composite shapes, investigate how changing dimensions affects perimeter, area, surface area and volume, and discover the one-third relationships between prisms and pyramids and between cylinders and cones. Python code tests every case to find the best dimensions.
Assessment of learning: Design a Space, an accessible outdoor learning space with a ramp, a raised bed and planters, plus a measurement story, with a rubric. A unit test with full solutions is also included.
