MTH1W Unit 1: The Story of Numbers
Number talks, number systems from many cultures, number sets, density, infinity and limits, integers, and positive and negative fractions in real contexts, with first steps in Python.

Where do our numbers come from, and how do we use them to describe the world? Students build a community of mathematicians with number talks, explore number systems from many cultures (Babylonian base 60, Maya base 20, Indian rules for zero and negatives, Chinese counting rods and the Kaktovik numerals created by Iñupiaq students), sort numbers into sets, discover density, infinity and limits with their first Python loops, and build fluency with integers and positive and negative fractions through temperatures, elevations, recipes and carpentry.
Assessment of learning: a Number Story research project and a set of real-world rational-number problems, with a rubric. A unit test with full solutions is also included.
